Posts decide it: how the repair-or-replace call gets made
Boards, rails and wire are replaceable parts. Posts are the fence. That one sentence settles most of these calls. If the posts are sound, nearly anything above ground is a repair worth making. If the posts are going along the whole length of the run, a patch is money you spend again, on a different section every year until you stop.
You can run the checks yourself before you call:
- Push every post at chest height and count what moves. One or two loose in a long run is a straightforward repair. A quarter of them loose, or soft all the way down, means every post went in the same season in the same ground and the rest are on the same clock.
- Sight down the line from one end. A single bad spot in an otherwise straight fence is local damage. A line that waves, or leans all one direction, is a post-setting problem, and board work does not touch it.
- Dig a finger into the wood at the soil line, not at eye level. A post can look perfect at shoulder height and be gone where it counts.
- Count your repairs. If you have patched a different section each of the last several seasons, the fence is telling you something the individual repairs are not.
On farm fence the arithmetic shifts. Line posts are cheap and corners are not. Good corners plus a lot of tired line posts is a repair. Rotted corner and brace posts mean rebuilding that stretch, because tension has to pull against something that will stand. Our repair or replace guide walks the decision. What a repair involves, by material
The work is different in each one, and how disruptive it is comes down to the posts.
Wood fence repair
Bottom rails and the bottom ends of the pickets go first, because that is where moisture sits, and rails usually fail before the boards they carry. A post that shifted but is still solid gets pulled plumb, re-set and re-concreted, with the concrete crowned so water sheds away. One rotted through at the soil line comes out and a new one goes in at full depth. Vinyl fence repair
Vinyl is a panel system rather than a board system, so a repair means swapping rails, pickets or whole panels out of the same style line, and resetting posts as we would on wood. The constraint is availability, not labor. If your style, rail profile and color are still made, the repair is invisible. If the style has been discontinued, the closest panel goes where it shows least, and you hear that before we order.
Chain link repair
Older chain link fails predictably: bottom rail rusts through, fabric slacks off the tension bar, line posts bend. We retension fabric, replace rusted rail, straighten or swap bent posts, and renew tension bands and bars. It stops making sense when the fabric is rusting through the length of the run, because new fabric on old posts is most of the work of a new fence. Aluminum and ornamental iron fail at fasteners and impact points instead of from rot, and repair the same way: damaged sections off, new sections in, posts reset.
Farm and wire fence repair
Woven wire and barbed both slack off, and slack in the middle of a run usually traces back to a corner. We reset or replace corner and brace posts so tension has something to pull against, restretch the run off them, splice where a tree came down, and put in new staples and clips. Matching here means matching the system, not the color: wire gauge, mesh spacing, rail count and board spacing all have to carry through, because a splice between two patterns is a weak point and stock will find it. Gate repair, any material
A gate you have to lift to latch is not a gate problem. Either the hinge post moved or the frame racked out of square. We square the frame, brace or cable it, fit hardware sized for the actual weight, and rehang it plumb. Where the hinge post is the cause, the honest fix is a new hinge post set for that gate's load. We walk the whole fence, not just the broken part
The section on the ground is obvious. What matters is the rest of the line. We push every post and pull every rail. On a farm run we start at the corners, because that is usually where the answer is.
You hear straight whether it will hold
If a repair carries the fence for years, we say so. If you are about to spend the money twice, we say that instead, on your own posts.
You get a written quote
Post count, board count, wire footage, gate work and haul-off, all listed out. Where one stretch is worth repairing and another is not, the quote splits it.
Tennessee 811 before we dig
Every new post hole means a utility locate. State law requires notifying 811 at least three working days before any excavation, hand tools included, and utilities mark within that window. We make the call. A patch needing no hole can go sooner, which is why we ask on the phone whether we are digging.
Posts first, cured before anything hangs on them
New hole, new post, new concrete, set before a rail, panel or gate puts load on it. Skipping that is how a new post ends up leaning like the old one. Then rails, boards, panels and gates go back on, matched in profile and height, and gates get worked until they latch without a lift.
Cleanup and a walk of the line
Broken boards, old posts, concrete and scrap wire go with us. Scrap wire left in a pasture is a vet bill waiting to happen. Then we walk it with you before we leave.
Storm damage, and where our part stops
Jackson has a documented history of severe, damaging tornadoes, and in an ordinary spring a good line of wind will still lay a privacy fence over. A solid board fence catches wind like a sail, and all that load goes into the posts. The run that goes down is usually the one on the exposed side of the lot, where the posts were already working loose.
After a system moves through, walk the line and push on every post before you call. If one moves and the two beside it do not, that is the one worth reporting, before it takes its neighbors with it. Take photos while there is light, and leave a downed limb where it landed unless moving it is safe, because how it fell tells us what took the load.

Permits on repair work
Replacing boards and resetting a post in an existing fence line normally is not a permit matter. Rebuilding a whole run, moving the line, or going taller can be. Inside the Jackson city limits a fence permit is required for fence installation, and the finished side of a privacy fence must face the neighbors and any public right-of-way. In unincorporated Madison County no building permit is required for a standard residential fence 7 feet or under. Common questions
Do you deal with my insurance company?
+No. We repair the fence, and we do not file with or bill insurers. We will give you a written, itemized estimate of the work and you can hand it to whoever you need to. What your policy covers is between you and your carrier.
Can you match my existing fence?
+Usually. Wood matches structurally right away, and fresh boards gray in over a season or two. Staining the repaired section along with the runs on either side evens the color faster. Vinyl and ornamental aluminum come down to whether the manufacturer still makes that style. If the match will be visible, we tell you before we start.
My gate has to be lifted to latch. Is that fixable?
+Almost always. It is either the hinge post leaning or the gate frame racking out of square, and both have fixes. The cheap version is a brace and new hardware. The real fix, when the post is the problem, is a new hinge post set for the load the gate puts on it.
Do you do small repairs?
+Yes. One post, a few boards, a gate that quit working. Tell us what is wrong when you call so we can bring the right material the first trip. If your dog is getting out through the hole, say that up front, because that changes how we schedule it.
