Fence Repair in Gibson County, TN
A storm-leaned run in town, a washout where the fence crosses a ditch, a gate the combine has to clear. We repair fences across Gibson County, and the repair is different at every scale.
A town lot and a field line are two different repairs
Gibson County is big. It covers 604 square miles, the 2020 Census counts about seven in ten as rural, and it holds towns from Trenton and Humboldt to Milan and Medina. A fence repair here can mean a hundred feet of wood privacy fence behind a house or a quarter mile of wire along a crop field. The word is the same. The work is not.
On a town lot, a repair is mostly about posts and the parts that touch the ground, and about matching what is already there. The neighbors can see it. On a field line, a repair is mostly about corners, tension and gates that heavy equipment has to pass through, and what matters is whether it keeps stock or property where you want them.
If you are not sure which kind of repair you have, describe it on the phone. Tell us what you see, and the first answer is whether it needs a visit, a small fix or a rebuild. For the town-by-town versions, see Trenton, Medina, Humboldt and Milan. This page covers what is true across the county.

Wind country: why long runs lean after storm season
NOAA's storm database lists 20 tornadoes in Gibson County in records that start in 2000, five of them rated F2 or EF2 or stronger. Two F3 tornadoes hit the county on April 2, 2006, one at Bradford and one at Rutherford. A December 10, 2021 EF3 ran from Cool Springs to Kenton, with peak winds estimated at 140 mph in Gibson County. An EF2 followed on February 15, 2025, southeast of Tuckers Corner and across the Milan Highway. The database also lists more than a hundred thunderstorm-wind entries.
A fence does not need a tornado to fail, because ordinary storm-line wind is hard on a long run. A solid privacy fence catches wind like a sail, and a long run on open ground catches more of it than a short one between two houses. A run that faces open ground and has posts already working loose is the likeliest to go.

A shared fence in the country: who pays for what
Out in the county, some fence sits on a property line between two owners. Tennessee has a statute for that case, Title 44, Chapter 8, Part 2 of the Tennessee Code. It defines a partition fence as one built on the line between lands owned by different people. It says such a fence may be built and repaired at the joint expense of the owners, and that someone who joins a neighbor's fence or uses it as a partition fence pays the builder that person's proportion of the cost. A neighbor who wants to take a partition fence down has to give six months' written notice unless both owners agree. There is also a written-disclaimer rule when farmland sits on one side of the line and non-farm land on the other. We are a fence contractor and not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. It helps to know the law exists before a repair turns into an argument.
The practical part is simple. If your neighbor's side of a shared line is down, talk before anyone pays for anything, and agree on who fixes which stretch. Get it in writing, even a short note. More is in replacing a shared neighbor fence and property line disputes in Tennessee.
Crop country: ditch crossings, washouts and equipment gates
The 2017 Census of Agriculture counted 777 farms in Gibson County on more than 287,000 acres, with cropland making up most of it. Field-edge fence can fail in several ways, and three come up often.
- The washout. Where a fence crosses a ditch or a low draw, water can move under it in a hard rain. Debris collects against the wire, the wire drags, and a post on the bank gets undercut. As general practice, a repair sets the post back from the cut and builds the crossing to give when water comes through instead of fighting it.
- The corner. A leaning corner post lets the whole run go slack, and the wire has to be restretched against a corner that holds.
- The gate. An equipment gate is wide and heavy, so its hinge post carries a lot. When one drags, the post has often moved, and the repair starts there rather than with the hinges.
County-wide, USDA soil data shows silt loams over a tight layer leading the map, with wet bottomland soils along the creeks. A little more than one acre in four is poorly or somewhat poorly drained. In wet ground like that, a shallow post is likely to be the first to show it. For field fence and horse fence see field wire fencing and split rail and farm fence.
Gibson County fence repair, answered
My neighbor's half of a shared fence is down. Who has to fix it?
+Tennessee has a partition-fence statute for fences built on the line between lands owned by different people. It allows them to be built and repaired at the owners' joint expense, and someone who joins a neighbor's fence owes a proportionate share of its cost. We are not lawyers and cannot tell you how it applies to your fence. Talk to your neighbor first and agree in writing on who repairs which stretch.
Where my fence crosses a ditch, it washes out every time it rains. Can that be fixed?
+Often, but not by putting the same posts back in the same spot. As general practice, the fix sets posts back from the cut and builds the crossing so water and debris can pass instead of piling up against it. Expect to check it after heavy rain.
Do you repair fence in the small towns as well as on farms?
+Yes. Town lot, rental house, field edge or pasture, the first step is the same: check the posts. Town repairs lean toward matching and appearance. Farm repairs lean toward corners, wire and gates.
Do I need a permit to repair my fence in Gibson County?
+Boards back on or a post reset in an existing line is a repair. A rebuild, a moved line or a taller fence is a different question. Gibson County has a building inspector at (731) 855-7663, and the county's page does not say whether that office covers incorporated towns. A town can have its own rules too, so for that kind of work call whichever office covers your address before the job is priced.
A storm laid a whole run over. Can it be stood back up?
+Sometimes, if the posts are sound and the ground has not let go. Often a run that fell had posts already working loose, and standing it up on the same posts means it can fall again. Every post in the run needs checking first. If the posts are fine, it is a repair. If they are not, you want to know before you pay for boards.
